At some point during 2004 I started to piece together a stonefly pattern that was DURABLE, caught an anglers eye and really ticked off a Salmon. In 2006 I completed the process. From the first trip using the Death Stonefly nymph, I knew it was going to be a great fly. My father landed the first salmon on a Death Stonefly nymph, it was a blue/black one. I learned long ago through a conversation with an angler from Massachusetts that the Salmon River has many large stonefly nymphs. I watched this guy fish and he put on a clinic. His casting was insane and those black nymphs and leeches he was using, were working. I always fished stonefly nymphs, but they were trout sized and pretty. I finally had enough after I landed a nice king salmon and another angler came to see what my fly was. I went to show it to him, and it was mangled. That moment started the quest to create an effective stonefly pattern that would last longer than one fish. I have had many anglers tell me how awesome the fly is and that it is now their go to fly. I love hearing the stories and seeing the photos of fish caught with a Death Stonefly nymph. I have, however, had anglers ask me streamside what fly I'm using, only to have them step back and go, Wow.....I've never seen something that big!! But it works, yes it works. This fly is tied on a hook I found that is offered by a very reputable and longstanding fly shop. It is super sharp, 3X strong and durable. I also do Vin's Bug Shoppe SELECT flies, these Death Stoneflies are tied on Daiichi 2161 or 2151 steelhead irons. I can also tie it on a Gamakatsu T10-6H hook. The SELECT flies will cost more; but if you want the best, you pay for the best. If you are fishing rivers for King and Coho Salmon, this is the fly to have on the end of your line.
There are many color combinations available and I mostly tie custom orders. Please understand material availablity will determine if I can create a Death Stonefly in the color scheme you would like. Check out the flies below.
